Popular etcd use cases

Kubernetes control plane storage

etcd is the de-facto data store for Kubernetes. Using Canonical Kubernetes together with our etcd artifacts is the best way to get reliable and securely maintained K8s deployments.

Configuration management

etcd is a highly reliable and strongly consistent key-value store, which makes it a foundational component for building resilient and fault-tolerant systems. For example, it can be used as the source of truth for configuration management among diverse applications.

Service discovery

Due to its strong consistency and simple API, etcd is often used for service discovery in geo-distributed setups. Typically, service providers will publish their endpoints in etcd and consumers will regularly check it for any endpoint change.

etcd is a good alternative to Apache Zookeeper or Consul for service discovery related use cases.

Distributed locking

When operations must be coordinated across multiple nodes, you can either rely on a central orchestrator to serialize them or implement distributed locking to ensure mutual exclusion. Thanks to its strong serializability guarantees, etcd is a reliable foundation for implementing these patterns.
